This novel transports you to another time and place—specifically Tamil village life at a time in Ceylon when new political troubles were brewing. It’s a feminist book, with girls and women at its heart. We love young Gowri, the protagonist, who dreams of education and a life beyond the limitations of traditional marriage. Her grandmother, the family matriarch, has old-fashioned ideas—but we love her too. The descriptions are vivid, and the humour is delightful, woven into the text at every turn… “His laughter sounded like empty tins being rattled by a child.”
